If anyone out there with a knowledge of either foriegn languages or people gifted with unique auditory perception can explain this, I'd love to hear it. So I went into a local fancy pastry store in search of Ryan's birthday tiramisu. I asked the lady if they had tiramisu, she nodded at me, then the phone rang. She held up one finger as if to say "just a moment, please," and talked to someone on the phone in a different language. I don't really know which language it was ... anyway ... then she hangs up and looks at me and I ask again if they have tiramisu. She says yes. I say, is it one serving or a whole tray of it. She says it's just for one person. I say that's perfect and I'll have one, please. She says that it will be about ten minutes. I tell her I'll be back to pick it up and then I go off to other stores to get other foodstuffs, all the while thinking to myself, "wow, she's making a whole tiramisu fresh just for me? That's awesome. This is going to be great!" So I go back in there and there's a different guy at the register. He looks at me, I say, "she's making me a tiramisu." He nods and smiles. I wait a little more ... then I watch the lady put tape on a fancy pastry box and hand it to me. I pay her for the treat and exit the store. The box seems oddly hot ... I'd always thought tiramisu was a cold dessert ... but then I remember that it's got like espresso on it or something ... so that was the end of that ... anyway, I finally get back to the apartment and am ready to put it in the fridge, but then I decide to sneak a peek at the lovely freshly-made dessert. I remove the tape, lift open the fancy pastry box and discover ... a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. Now, I'm sure it's a delicious sandwich. It's even got melted cheese on top of the bread (probably makes it difficult to pick up and eat, but hey, who doesn't like bonus cheese?). The only thing that really concerns me is, what the heck did she think I said???? So if any of you can think of any sort of food item that sounds like "tiramisu" but in actuality is a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, please do let me know. Fantastic. |
