Football! Football! Football! Wooo!!

So here's a good story about one of my students.

This student, let's call him Lance, does not show up to the first day of class. This does not alarm me, because sometimes kids miss the first day because they're confused or lost or have schedule problems. However, every student who has ever missed the first class has either A) dropped the class or B) sent me an apologetic email explaining about how they went to the wrong building or whatever, and then asked how they could make up the work they missed. So Lance of course opts for C), which is show up the second day without a single word of explanation as to why he missed the first class. Lance also didn't buy the textbook (and to the best of my knowledge, still hasn't), has yet to make up the first assignment, and ... get this ... didn't bring a pen OR a piece of paper to class. WTF? Anyhoo, on Thursday, the class was scheduled to go to the library for a research instruction session. Not only did I tell the class on both the Thursday and Tuesday before that, but I emailed them a reminder on Wednesday. So every single student in both of my classes shows up to the library except, of course, Lance. Lance then emails me this gem: "Hey. It's Lance. I forgot we were going to the library today. I went to the classroom and didn't see anyone there, so I just left. Is there any way this absence can not be counted against me?"

That's either nervy or stupid.

Here's an early nugget of wisdom from one of my more gifted students. And yes, English is his first language:

"In contrast to the economic advantages of banning smoking in the workplace, we must distinguish between the system of society, life, and living in general."

Good times!
